Helping people discover Christ through the seasons of life

Gossiping Tongues

Good Afternoon Harvesters,

Proverbs 6:16, 19, "There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to Him...a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community." And Proverbs 18:8, "The words of gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts."

It is amazing what we end up allowing in our lives. In a culture that calls for tearing one another down to get ahead in life, to using even an untrue story to make others seem small, gossip is a dangerous and divisive tool that our enemy, Satan, loves to use on God's people. I have been guilty and have had to repent to God and ask forgiveness from others because I allowed gossip to enter into my life.

I hope Sunday, helped each of you to take a long hard look at your life and see why you participate in it and that their is help in overcoming it.  We should not allow the chains from lying and gossip to be forged in our lives but if we do, we know that we have a Savior who can break those and help us to be free and stay free from them.

It is amazing to me how quickly we forget that our words have the power of life and death. We have the power to build someone up or to destroy all that they are. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 12:36-37, "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoke. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." I really like how The Message puts these verses, "Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation."

How about you and your words?  Are you speaking more often, life or death? It really is true that lying and gossip go hand in hand and how quickly it can destroy.  My prayer for each of you is that you will consider our words carefully and allow words of life, words that build up more than words of death and destruction.

Hawk Nelson says in his song, "Speak Life",
Words can build us up
Words can break us down
Start a fire in our hearts or
Put it out
Let my words be life
Let my words be truth
I don't wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to you

I wanna speak your love
Not just another noise
Oh, I wanna be your light
I wanna be your voice
Let my words be life
Let my words be truth
I don't wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to you

Remember as Christ-followers we should speak life, not death.
